Devlog #15: Super Dungeon Thoughts


Today's topic is the major addition in the 0.4 update, the catacombs.

For those that haven't seen it yet, I'm talking about the dungeon that opens up after beating the 2nd mission. The group has been tasked with exploring the catacombs, a series of caves under Sthalgrave.  By exploring the ancient tunnels maybe you'll find out why they exist.

The catacombs are the super dungeon of ROTW. It was inspired by Wizardry, a classic dungeon-crawler RPG series.  I plan for the catacombs to be a brutal series of challenges, and eventually ROTW's ultimate challenge. 

The catacombs were created for 2 main reasons. 1, I wanted a way for players to grind without having to commit to a main mission, and 2, I wanted to create a challenging endgame activity.  Of course, I wanted to make the catacombs a bit more interesting than a place to grind, so I added the crafting system. All gear gained through crafting with catacombs materials is unique, and can't acquired anywhere else. I also plan for this gear to be the strongest in the game with unique effects to boot.

It's a large commitment, but a good one I feel.  every few updates will add a bit more to the catacombs, and each floor added will be more dangerous than the last. Featuring traps, unique enemy variants, and eventually bosses!
